More about Calissons and Cezanne: in 1420, King Rene's wife felt sad, so Rene's chef decided that he'd invent a candy to cheer her up. That's how the calisson was born. Paul Cezanne, also a native from Aix en Provence, loved the Sainte-Victoire mountain near his home in and he painted it over 60 times! Cézanne was fascinated by the rugged architectural forms in the mountains of Provence and painted the same scene from many different angles. Another area he loved painting was L'Estaque coast near Marseille. Cézanne is recognized as the painter who bridged the late 19th century's Impressionism and the early 20th century's Cubism.
