Vintage Provence Santon - Premium Figurine for Nativity Sets.

Santons are small hand-painted, terracotta figurines produced in Provence, France and used to create nativity scenes. This wonderful Santon signed Paul Fouque represents a miller wearing the traditional clothing of his profession and carrying a sack of flour on his back.

This is actually an old piece made of terra cotta. Click the image to the right to see details: this santon is in very good condition and will make a great addition to your nativity set!

Reads: "Paul Fouque, Santonnier, Aix en Provence" at the bottom (a santonnier is a maker of santons).

More about Creches and Santons: when Christmas comes, the French love to build a creche, French for nativity set. A creche is a set of santons or figurines arranged in a stable to depict the birth of Jesus Christ. Nativity scenes usually exhibit figures representing the infant Jesus, his mother Mary, Mary's husband, Joseph and the 3 wise men. In Provence, people like to also include traditional figures from their village such a miller, a scissors grinder, the fishwife, the blind man, or the chestnut seller.
